Background Details
- Julia was the result of a fling between Florimel and a charming Chaos lord named Morgan. As an infant, Julia was weak and somewhat sickly. So her mother shipped her off to live with her father.
- Julia's father, Morgan, was an accomplished musician and sorcerer.
- Morgan, was a member of a fairly tightly-knit branch of the Jesby clan in Chaos. Their background: The dominant figure is her grandmother, Mira. Mira is married to two brothers - Colin and Christophe. They have four children - Morgan, Thea, and Nicholas and Anya (Nick and Anya are twins). Morgan was the oldest sibling. Mira was a dancer/scam artist/pickpocket/performance artist who happened to hit it off with a couple of slumming Chaos Lords. They were perfect for each other, and spent a number of years advancing their own schemes and adventures. Once they settled down a bit, they set themselves up in the Ways of Jesby. Even then, they still tended to live a somewhat nomadic existence, turning up at circuses, travelling shows and places of public entertainment.
- Julia was raised by this bunch. Skills she picked up as a child:
- dancing
- juggling
- sleight of hand
- singing (she has a good voice)
- courtly manners (from her grandfathers and aunts)
- distraction
- sorcery
- shape-changing.
- Julia walks the Logres pattern at the age of 20.
- Soon after this, she received an invitation from her Mother to visit her in Amber. They have a cordial and somewhat uncomfortable visit, during which Julia is introduced to the court of Amber, and gets Trumps for her mother, her mother's estate and castle Amber. During the visit, her Mother inquires politely about Morgan. Julia doesn't tell her much, but does say where he's been lately.
- Six months later, Morgan turns up dead in a seedy hotel room in a twisting, turning, high-tech shadow. It's a drug overdose. Julia had never known him to use drugs. The rest of the clan vow to find out what they can in the Courts of Chaos. Julia decides to find out what she can in Amber.
- Morgan was not very old when he fathered Julia. More of a big brother figure than a father. Julia had been very fond of him.
- Morgan had a bad habit of not taking powerful people very seriously. He had a caustic wit, and liked to make them look foolish in public. This made him both friends and enemies.
- How Julia got Brisingamen:
- One evening, Julia overhears some trolls talking in a nightclub she owns in a 1950's-tech shadow. It's the kind of place that mobsters take their girlfriends but not their wives. It has a small attached casino.
- The troll is bragging about a gold necklace he took from a mark in a poker game. He dangles it around for his buddies to see. Doesn't appear to sense that it's magic. Julia does though.
- Later, she assumes her Chaos form, comes over to the table, and strikes up a conversation with these trolls. They party together and have a really good time.
- When the trolls wake up in the morning, their party girl is gone, and so is the necklace. They howl and complain, so that the owner of the establishment has them kicked out for causing trouble....
- In the Ways of Jesby Julia has a set of rooms. If one knows where to look, there's a carefully hidden way into a small shrine dedicated to Florimel (similar to the ones for other characters in the novels). It looks like a fairly typical shrine, but if you look quite closely at the portrait you'll find a number of tiny holes, and evidence of past repairs. Morgan took away her darts when he figured out what she was really doing in that shrine (she was about 14). Julia's emotions regarding her mother are complicated, to say the least.
- Another detail: Julia carries wallet photos of her Jesby relations, and a favourite reading corner in her place in shadow features a medium-sized family portrait.
Titles
- In Amber, she is Countess of the Garden Lands, a collection of vassal states to the south, where they grow fruit and vegetables.
- In the Courts of Chaos, she has no title, but she is recognized as a Knight for belonging to a noble house and having successfully undertaken the Logrus. The title carries no lands and no income, but she is entitled to be addressed as Dame Julia of Jesby, and it officially makes her nobility.
